Invocation: Restoring Our Faith

January 25, 2010

By Rev. Fr. Horacio de la Costa, S.J.

Delivered at the opening of  the Senate session on the morning of January 26, 1970, during the Seventh Congress of the Republic of the Philippines.

Almighty and Eternal God.

We ask your blessings on this Assembly.

These are the men and women our people have chosen to lead them at this turning point in our history.

Their task it is to restore our faith in democratic government.

Their task it is to restore our hope that justice can prevail in our land. Equal justice, the same for the poor as for the affluent. Swift justice, not denied by the law’s delays. Justice enforced not only on the petty criminal but on the powerful corruptor.

Their task it is above all to insure that when we come to frame a Constitution that shall be truly ours, it will be framed by a non-partisan convention truly representative of the people’s insights and the people’s will.

This is the clear mandate terrible in its clarity given by our people to this Senate. It is a heavy charge. It is also an inspiring challenge.

We ask You, Lord and Father, to give our Senators the wisdom and the courage, but above all that courage to make good this charge and to respect to this challenge.
